Introduction to Poetry

Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins

This is one of my all time favorites. It is a poem about reading poems. In my opinion I think it is directed toward high school students. It's funny but extremely true. It talks about how high school students often try too hard to analyze or understand poetry when sometimes all you have to do is read it, sit for a minute, and let the words sink in to your mind.

  1. I agree, Chelsey. Analysis is often forced on a poem. Rather, you should simply be able to read it, enjoy, and connect it to your own life. Better to do that than worry over whether you understood what the author meant; what he meant is for him, and what it means to you is for you.
